Check the premises and regulated activity
The SBA explains that state, county and city requirements depend on activity and location. Local zoning can apply to home businesses. Describe visitor traffic, stock and equipment when contacting the relevant planning office.
Official registration or premises guidance
Do not choose a state solely because a formation advert promises an easy company. Establish where the work occurs and which jurisdictions you will actually deal with.
Use local evidence before committing
Compare a local service area using Census Business Builder. Note whether the underlying measure comes from a census, survey or business dataset, and retain its reference period.
Define one customer group and a realistic delivery area. Compare alternatives and speak to potential buyers; population size alone does not establish demand. For remote services, language, time zone and access to decision-makers may be more relevant than a national total.
Your preparation checklist
- Name the exact activity and the state, county and city.
- Compare the appropriate structure and registration route with the official guidance.
- Ask which tax registrations, sector permissions and premises checks apply before trading.
- Budget in USD and label the currency; keep taxes, payment fees and owner time separate.
- Record the dataset, geography and reference period for any market claim.
- Resolve non-resident or cross-border questions separately if those describe your situation.
Keep the official response, date and next action. A business name, tax number or course certificate does not by itself settle the other checks.
