Starting a home business in Ireland: where to begin

Find the official setup route, location checks and market-data starting points for Ireland.

Ireland · Revenue, CRO and relevant local or sector authority · Sources checked 8 October 2026

Start with the right jurisdiction

Revenue’s startup guidance distinguishes sole traders, partnerships and companies for tax-registration purposes. Use the route that fits your circumstances and check the required tax registrations directly.

Official setup guide

Operating here or selling here? Record where you live, where you perform the work and where customers are located. This page is an orientation for activity connected with Ireland; it does not establish a foreign founder’s immigration, work or tax status.

Check the premises and regulated activity

The Companies Registration Office explains that registering a business name does not create a separate legal entity. Keep that registration distinct from tax and any activity or location permissions you must check.

Official registration or premises guidance

Do not confuse the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Choose the correct jurisdiction before following tax, registration or local-authority instructions.

Use local evidence before committing

The CSO’s 2022 small-area statistics provide a local research starting point. Check boundary changes and the exact population measure before comparing them with another census or a different country.

CSO — Census 2022 Small Area Population Statistics

Define one customer group and a realistic delivery area. Compare alternatives and speak to potential buyers; population size alone does not establish demand. For remote services, language, time zone and access to decision-makers may be more relevant than a national total.

Your preparation checklist

  • Name the exact activity and the revenue, cro and relevant local or sector authority.
  • Compare the appropriate structure and registration route with the official guidance.
  • Ask which tax registrations, sector permissions and premises checks apply before trading.
  • Budget in EUR and label the currency; keep taxes, payment fees and owner time separate.
  • Record the dataset, geography and reference period for any market claim.
  • Resolve non-resident or cross-border questions separately if those describe your situation.

Keep the official response, date and next action. A business name, tax number or course certificate does not by itself settle the other checks.

Keep a country-specific record

Save your jurisdiction, official source, date checked and unanswered questions. The free kit also includes a local-market evidence worksheet.
