Starting a home business in Canada: where to begin

Find the official setup route, location checks and market-data starting points for Canada.

Start with the right jurisdiction

Canada’s startup portal separates planning, business structure, registration and permits. Identify your province or territory and municipality before choosing an application route.

Official setup guide

Operating here or selling here? Record where you live, where you perform the work and where customers are located. This page is an orientation for activity connected with Canada; it does not establish a foreign founder’s immigration, work or tax status.

Check the premises and regulated activity

Canada’s permits portal points to BizPaL for federal, provincial, territorial and municipal requirements. Use it with the specific activity and location, then confirm unresolved questions with the responsible office.

Official registration or premises guidance

Keep business-name registration, tax accounts and permission for the actual premises as distinct checks. Ask about the language and consumer information needed for the market you serve, including Quebec where relevant.

Use local evidence before committing

The 2021 Census Profile is a historical starting point. Record the geography and census year; use newer official estimates when the decision needs a more recent population measure.

Statistics Canada — 2021 Census Profile

Define one customer group and a realistic delivery area. Compare alternatives and speak to potential buyers; population size alone does not establish demand. For remote services, language, time zone and access to decision-makers may be more relevant than a national total.

Your preparation checklist

  • Name the exact activity and the province or territory and municipality.
  • Compare the appropriate structure and registration route with the official guidance.
  • Ask which tax registrations, sector permissions and premises checks apply before trading.
  • Budget in CAD and label the currency; keep taxes, payment fees and owner time separate.
  • Record the dataset, geography and reference period for any market claim.
  • Resolve non-resident or cross-border questions separately if those describe your situation.

Keep the official response, date and next action. A business name, tax number or course certificate does not by itself settle the other checks.

Keep a country-specific record

Save your jurisdiction, official source, date checked and unanswered questions. The free kit also includes a local-market evidence worksheet.
