HOME BUSINESS LIBRARY / COUNTRY GUIDES

Can you operate a business from home? Check the local rules

Compare the questions for a home office, customer visits, storage or food preparation in your actual jurisdiction.

International planning · Sources checked 8 October 2026

Planning for an overseas market? Choose your country and local setup route. Check where you operate separately from where your customers live.

Describe use, not just the mailing address

Write down visitors, deliveries, equipment, working hours, signage and storage. A remote desk-based service and a kitchen producing food for sale raise different questions. Check the lease, property arrangement and any building-management restrictions as well as public requirements.

The UK home-business page discusses possible permissions and separate insurance. France’s guidance distinguishes domiciliation and the exercise of activity. Use the original instructions for your situation; these concepts are not interchangeable across countries.

Check before committing to a location

  • Ask whether intended activity is permitted and what evidence is needed.
  • Check whether visitors, employees, stock or equipment change the answer.
  • Treat a mail service or registered-office address separately from the place where work is performed.
  • Ask which sector, safety or insurance questions remain.
  • Save any conditions and review them when the activity changes.

Use a specific inquiry

Illustrative inquiry: “I plan to provide remote document-layout services from this address, with no visitors, employees or stock. Which local checks apply, and what changes would require another review?” Share the address through an appropriate official channel, not a public planning document.

Keep a country-specific record

Save your jurisdiction, official source, date checked and unanswered questions. The free kit also includes a local-market evidence worksheet.
