Planning for an overseas market? Choose your country and local setup route. Check where you operate separately from where your customers live.
Begin with a decision, not a league table
Ask whether you need the number of local businesses, new business creations, employment or another measure. These answer different questions. A count of businesses does not establish owner income, survival or the prospects of a new solo operator.
Use verified historical entry points
| Market | Source | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Official industry data route | Use the underlying dataset and its coverage, not only the dashboard label. |
| United Kingdom | Official industry data route | Read the active-business definition and reference period. |
| France | Official industry data route | Historical business and establishment creations, 2012–2024; creations are a flow, not the total stock of operating businesses. |
These are research entry points, not a harmonised seven-country dataset. For the other markets, begin with the statistical authority in the country guide and find the industry dataset that matches your question.
Keep stocks and flows separate
A business stock measures active units at a reference time. A creation series measures new units during a period. Do not compare France’s annual creations with a UK active-business total and call the difference market size. Likewise, enterprises and establishments are not always the same unit.
Record classification, geography, time period, revisions and missing or suppressed values. Missing does not mean zero. Keep nominal currency growth separate from an assertion about inflation-adjusted growth.
Combine history with fresh evidence
Use historical observations to frame a question about a niche, then investigate current alternatives, customer access and your own delivery costs. A past trend is not a forecast. The validation lesson provides a practical next step.
Keep a country-specific record
Save your jurisdiction, official source, date checked and unanswered questions. The free kit also includes a local-market evidence worksheet.
